VISUAL ARTIST – Pottery

My practice in clay is rooted in an interest in life. I think the “truths” of people, certainly the most interesting parts of them, lie in their performance under great stress. When they are forced to reveal the nature of the stuff they are made of. For me, so it is true with clay.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
My work focuses on creating functional pots which serve as a vehicle for reflections of tensions in daily life. I use punctuated forms, contrasting surfaces, obtuse embellishments and composed textures to show the potential of clay when it is pushed outside its comfort zone. By highlighting tool marks, fingerprints, and evidence of stresses, I celebrate the history of a pot’s making which enriches its individuality.
The history of process for the individual pot is culminated in the firing of a wood kiln. Specific decisions are made with a final objective in mind for the work to harmonize with the richness of information and variation of fly ash and atmosphere inside a living kiln. I am enchanted by the massive potential for discovery that firing in wood can bring forward for my practice and my pots. The careful consideration of nuance required to wood fire propels me to continue my work with fervent curiosity.

I have taught art classes/private lessons for adults and teaching/demonstrating in a school setting. I am interested in commissioned work and being a juror panelists for arts.
